What is Durak?
Durak is a card game that originated in late 18th century Russia and became popular among soldiers during the 1812 Russo-French war. The name means 'fool' and refers to the last player who has cards left in their hand. Durak is played with a deck of 36 cards, containing 6s through Aces. Aces are high and 6s are low.
The origin and history of Durak
Durak is one of the most popular card games in Russia and Eastern Europe, although it is occasionally seen in the West as well. It is Russia's most popular card game, having displaced Preferans. It has since become known in other parts of the world.
The game is attributed to have appeared in late 18th century Russian Empire and was popularized by Imperial Army conscripts during the 1812 Russo-French war. Initially a social pastime of uneducated peasants and industrial workers, after the October Revolution Durak has spread to numerous social levels by mid-20th century to soon become the most popular Soviet card game.
The objective and rules of Durak
The objective of the game is to shed all one's cards when there are no more cards left in the deck. At the end of the game, the last player with cards in their hand is the durak or 'fool'.
The game is typically played with two to five people, with six players if desired. The deck is shuffled, and each player is dealt six cards. The bottom card of the stock is turned and placed face up on the table, its suit determining the trump suit for the current deal. For example, if it is the 7 of diamonds, then diamonds rank higher than all plain-suit cards. The rest of the pack is then placed on half over the turnup and at right angles to it, so that it remains visible. These cards form the prikup or talon. The turnup remains part of the talon and is drawn as the last card. Cards discarded due to successful defences are placed in a discard pile next to the talon.
The player who has the lowest trump card will be the first attacker (note that there is no obligation to play that lowest trump card as the first card). The player to the attacker's left is always the defender. After each round of attack play proceeds clockwise. If the attack succeeds (see below), the defender loses their turn and the attack passes to the player on the defender's left. If the attack fails, the defender becomes the next attacker.
Cards are ranked 6 7 8 9 10 J Q K A (ascending order). A trump card of any rank beats all cards in the other three suits. For example, a 6 of trumps beats a K of any other suit. If the ranks are equal, then the card played by the defender beats the card played by the attacker. For example, if the trump suit is diamonds, and the attacker plays the 9 of spades, the defender can beat it with the 9 of diamonds or any higher trump card.
The attacker can attack with any card from their hand. The defender must defend with a higher card in the same suit as the attack card or with a trump card. The defender cannot defend with a card of a different plain suit. For example, if the attacker plays the 8 of clubs, the defender can defend with any club higher than 8 or any trump card, but not with a card of another plain suit.

The attacker can continue to attack with more cards, as long as they are of the same rank as any card already played during that round. For example, if the attacker starts with a 7 of hearts, and the defender defends with a 9 of hearts, the attacker can play another 7 (of any suit) and force the defender to defend again. The defender can also play a card of the same rank as one already played to pass the attack to the next player clockwise, who must then defend against all cards played. For example, if the attacker plays a 7 of hearts, and the defender has no hearts or trumps, they can play another 7 (of any suit) and pass the attack to their left neighbor.
The round ends when either:
The defender successfully defends against all attacks and no more attacks are possible or desired. In this case, all cards played during that round are discarded and placed face down on a pile near the talon. The defender becomes the next attacker and starts a new round by playing any card from their hand.
The defender fails to defend against an attack and must take all cards played during that round into their hand. In this case, the player to their left becomes the next attacker and starts a new round by playing any card from their hand.
After each round, each player who has fewer than six cards in their hand must draw cards from the talon until they have six cards or until the talon is empty. The attacker draws first, then the defender, then the next player in clockwise order, and so on. The turnup remains on top of the talon until it is drawn as the last card.
The game ends when one player has no cards left in their hand after an attack and there are no more cards left in the talon. This player is declared the winner. The last player who remains with cards in their hand is the durak or 'fool' and loses the game.
The variations and modes of Durak
There are many variations and modes of Durak that can make the game more interesting and challenging. Some of them are:
Podkidnoy Durak (Throw-in Fool): This is the most common variant of Durak. In this mode, after an initial attack, any player other than the defender can join the attack by playing a card of the same rank as one already played. The defender must then defend against all cards thrown in by the attackers. This mode allows more interaction and cooperation among players.
Perekidnoy Durak (Transfer Fool): This is a variant of Podkidnoy Durak where the defender can transfer the attack to the next player by playing a card of the same rank as the attack card. The next player must then defend against the original attack and any cards thrown in by other players. This mode allows more strategy and bluffing among players.
Beregovoy Durak (Coastal Fool): This is a variant of Durak where the players are divided into two teams, usually sitting opposite each other. The game is played as normal, except that teammates can help each other during the attack and defense. The game ends when one team has no cards left in their hands. This mode allows more teamwork and communication among players.
Durak s Vydoy (Fool with Reveal): This is a variant of Durak where each player reveals one card from their hand at the beginning of the game. This card determines their trump suit for the rest of the game. The game is played as normal, except that each player can only use their own trump suit to beat other cards. This mode adds more complexity and unpredictability to the game.
Durak s Prostymi (Fool with Simples): This is a variant of Durak where there are no trumps at all. The game is played as normal, except that all suits are equal and only the ranks matter. This mode makes the game more simple and straightforward.
